August in Italy 🇮🇹

Agosto è Agosto — August is August. In Italy, it’s one of the most popular times to visit. You’ll find the beaches packed, major cities buzzing with tourists, and the whole country in vacation mode.

The August Vibe

Many Italians take their summer holidays in August, leaving big cities unusually quiet — perfect if you don’t mind the heat. In the middle of the month, life slows down even more for Ferragosto (August 15), a national holiday celebrating the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

It’s a time to relax before the start of the new school year and the return to work. Italians often take two weeks off — swapping the mountains for the beach or the beach for the mountains.

Escaping the Heat

August in Italy is hot and humid, especially in the cities. Many head to the cooler mountain regions for fresh breezes, while those in the south often embrace the pisolino (afternoon nap) to escape the midday sun. Early risers take advantage of cooler mornings to complete outdoor chores before 1:00 pm.

I remember being in Italy one August and realizing just how much daily life adapts to the summer heat. The south feels more laid-back and agricultural, while the north tends to be more industrial, but everywhere, the pace is slower this time of year.
